Why I Travel

Its an interesting question. Why do I like to travel as much as I do? It's probably part of the addict that is inside me. I like change, I like things new and exciting. I love food, and when I travel I try to explore the food of that region. I love seeing beautiful places and meeting beautiful people. If you know me, you know I do not struggle with introducing myself or carrying on a conversation. I like people. I really like nice people. Kindness is the most attractive quality in people. I seek new experiences.

But travel alone? It certainly is different. I loved having a travel companion for 25 years. Those years, I have now realized, were the most complete of my life. Of course traveling with someone you love is the best. John was a fantastic travel companion. He was the yin to my yang. He moved at a slower pace, which was a great benefit to me. Instead of doing 3 things a day, he would allow me to pick two, and always required some downtime in the middle of each travel day. I already know a few of my trips have way too much packed in them, and as an honor to my deceased spouse I will try each day to take some downtime.

I really look forward to meeting people along the way. The first month I will be playing 4 tennis tournaments in Australia. I have been playing competitive tennis the last several years with the greatest gay sporting organization in the world called the GLTA. I have made great friends (and a few rivals) along the way. We play hard and also have a lot of fun with one another. I know I will meet great guys and hope to socialize with them outside of the tournaments while I am in their world.

I also have the greatest gift of meeting sober folks along the way. One of the true joys of belonging to 12-step recovery organizations is the ability to meet and socialize with fellow sober people wherever I go. No matter the city or the country, our common recovery allows me to get to know people at a very deep level very quickly. I am very excited to get to some meeting along my journey.
