I have never enjoyed myself more at a museum then today at MONA, in Hobart, Tazmania.
It was abstract, moving, confusing, inspiring, and incredibly beautiful. The entire museum is underground, and what they do with the lighting and displays is otherworldly.
MONA stands for Museum of Old and New Art. It is the brainchild of its founder David Walsh, a Tasmanian millionaire. Its central themes are sex and death, and if those two things don’t evoke emotion, well you are hopeless. Personally, there were way too many vaginas, including a vagina wall, but don’t let that stop you. The work is amazing. It covers a multitude of different artists, genres, and styles. The amazing thing is how it all flows together.
The museum really made me miss my father. He was such a great man, and would have spent a year going through the museum.
I loved the more modern art the most.
Here is what also sets this museum apart from all others. You take a ferry from Hobart wharfs. The ferry has abstract art on it as well, starting to get you in the mood. The ferry ride is amazing as Hobart is a picturesque city with hills and mountains on open side and rivers and sea on the other. A 35 minute ride brings you to an island where this masterpiece is built into.
This property used to be a winery and I met the caretaker for the winery yesterday at the AO.
David built a museum underground, 4 levels and has continued to build structures today. They have live music every day. High energy music, which is also pumped throughout the museum. I counted 4 stages, one large stage outdoors and 3 other music venues inside the museum. There are about 6 restaurants and as many bars, as feeling good is a large part of their mission.
I will post pictures as soon as my computer downloads them from my phone.
If you ever travel to Australia, make this museum a must do!!!

Tomorrow I head to Bruny Island, including a 3 hour cruise around the island. I’m hoping to get back in enough time to go to the wildlife sanctuary and feed the Tasmanian devils. If I don’t get back in enough time I think I will delay my departure on Wednesday to Port Arthur to get to the sanctuary along the way.
